Urinary tract infection, also known as bladder infection, the common chronic UTI infection in paraplegics due to the urogenic, atonic bladder.

Urinary Bladder Infection in Paraplegia:
UTI Uribiotic® Unisex Formula

The Most Common Urinary Problem in Paraplegia (SCI)

Speak to Andrew Mierzejewski, Registered Holistic Nutritionist on Remedy Bladder-Prostate-Kidney Infection Naturally with UTI Uribiotic Formula
Urinary bladder infection has become a major medical problem in people with spinal cord injuries. This website is intended to allow you - a paraplegic bladder infection sufferer - to manage your own care, ask the right questions, insist on adequate management and information, and seek an optimal outcome for yourself as an informed patient.

Perhaps it will even help the health-care practitioners who are giving care - urologists, gynecologists, prostate specialists - to better understand and, hopefully, incorporate into their practice the natural approach to urinary tract infection (UTI) - its prevention and drug-free, safe treatment.

Over 250,000 Americans are spinal cord injured. Individuals with injuries below the cervical level of the spine, called thoracic injury, are most often referred to as paraplegics.

Paraplegics - over 50 percent males - have complete use of their hands and arms, which indicates that only two lower limbs are affected.

Quadraplegics are individuals with cervical injuries whose all four limbs are affected.

Spinal cord injuries are also referenced as complete and incomplete. In a complete spinal cord injury communication is stopped, whereas an incomplete injury leaves some nerve function intact.

The Dysfunctional Neurogenic Bladder

People with spinal cord injuries must work harder to maintain their health.

A common medical complication during the initial medical and rehabilitation period after spinal-cord injury are urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to dysfunctional neurogenic bladder - an unstable or atonic bladder, with no muscle tone.

Unfortunately, urinary tract infections continue to be a problem throughout the life of many spinal-cord-injured individuals; repeated infections may also result in further complications, such as renal failure.

The likelihood of urinary tract infections is also increased by the development of urinary calculi (mineral deposits) common in people with spinal cord injuries.

Chronic Bacteriuria: Common Health Concern

The urinary system of the human body rids the body of liquid waste regularly. Periodic emptying is caused by expansion of the bladder's contents.

Up to this point everything is controlled by chemical reactions and a part of the nervous system (autonomic) that is normally not part of consciousness. As the bladder expands, the conscious mind becomes aware of the need to empty.

It is this release, emptying process that is impaired in many disabled people. Neurons tying urinary release messages and consciousness are impaired, thus preventing normal urination.

Impaired bladder function is even further complicated by urinary tract infections. Unable to completely void, it gives remaining bacteria, namely E. coli, the opportunity, over time, in its warm dark environment - an excellent setting for rapid growth.

Therefore, chronic bacteriuria - the presence of bacteria in the urine - is a common occurrence among spinal-cord injury patients who may develop symptoms of infection or - remain asymptomatic.

Paraplegics and quadriplegics are just a few disabilities experiencing urinary problems. Although each disability has its own unique dysfunctional characteristics, no two people with the same disability are exactly alike.

The Natural Atonic Bladder Management

The constant flushing of the urinary system, especially the bladder, is imperative for urinary health, especially for people with spinal cord injury.

Flushing minimizes the possibility of infection. However, if the bladder becomes distended and cannot be voluntarily voided, or when a bladder infection occurs, various symptoms appear, such as:

  • lower abdominal discomfort (pain or cramps)
  • cloudy or bloody urine
  • frequency in involuntary urination, or
  • cessation of urination.

The next stage, and for those who cannot experience pain, autonomic-dysreflexia may occur with such symptoms as:

  • increased blood pressure
  • profuse sweating
  • rapid heart rate
  • emotional panic, and
  • other possible life-threatening symptoms.

The Medical Atonic Bladder Management

There are many medical management procedures to empty bladder contents and avoid urinary tract infections:

Less Aggressive: Catheterization
Some people learn to catheterize themselves periodically throughout the day. However, foreign bacteria may not always be controlled, even with antibiotics, making this procedure ineffective.

More Aggressive: Sphincterotomy
This approach employs a relatively simple surgery that cuts the muscle that controls urination. This often necessitates the use of an external condom catheter and collection leg-bag since bladder retention is compromised. Still others use an indwelling, or Foley, catheter with leg bag.

Use of Drugs
Some with dysfunctional bladders require the use of drugs that relax the bladder allowing for greater capacity.

Chemically Treated Test-Strips
Routine urinalysis keeping a check on urinary health at home.

Unsuccessful Medical Treatments

Catheterization often increases the risk of the urinary tract injuries and, therfore, recurrent bladder infections - a common problem in people with spinal cord impairment (SCI).

Exposed to repeated or long-term courses of antibiotics, in time, they also develop resistance to these drugs what makes maintaining healthy urinary tract for them even more difficult.

People write to us:

I am a 22-year-old quadraplegic and I have been suffering from acute UTI for the last 10 years. I have tried all kinds of anti-biotic and none seems to be working.

I take every morning and night a combination of vitamin c with cranbery supplement and I still don't see much difference.

I just finished a dose of anti-biotic and still have lots of stomach pain, back pain and sweating at night.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

As a paraplegic for almost 14 years, I was almost constantly on antibiotics due to chronic bladder infection. However, being afraid of possible side effects, for many years I was reluctant to consider any natural alternatives.

I was afraid of getting diarrhea or constipation. These are the worst - a real disaster! But after successful experience with D-Mannose PLUS, I started looking for other natural means to solve my problem.

And I was pleasantly surprised by lack of any adverse reactions to your URIBIOTIC Formula, which I introduced to my system very cautiously.

Two weeks later, my urine culture showed no E. coli. Burning went away in a few days.

I'm pleased to report such great results.

Problem solved! The infection is GONE! I just thought you might want to know this in case you get any customers notifying you that URIBIOTIC doesn't seem to be working.

November 14, 2006:

I was prescribed ciprofloxin, a very strong antibiotic with numerous possible side effects, for an acute and painful kidney infection. After 7 days it did seem to stop the infection in my kidney, but not in my urinary tract.

24 hours after completing my course of the antibiotic, my order of URIBIOTIC and D-Mannose PLUS arrived in the mail. I was experiencing debilitating discomfort when I took my first dosage of both products.

Within about 8 hours of beginning the natural remedy I began to feel relief from my discomfort.

After 48 hours, my fequent urination stopped and I had no discomfort.

I am continuing to take the remedies for another few days to make sure all infection is gone.

I am convinced that if I had have taken the remedies as soon as I noticed the symptoms of my infection, I would not have had to take dangerous antibiotics.

I recomend these products highly, they work and they are safe.

Best regards,

Leon D.

  • safely
  • effectively, and

Cautions and Contraindications

Sexual System:
UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula should not be consumed during pregnancy as it can cause contractions of the uterus (due to hydroquinone via arbutin present in Uva Ursi/Bearberry).

Immune System:
Uribiotic Unisex Formula should not be used by prostate cancer patients (due to the presence of Forskolin). Although Forskolin possesses numerous therapeutic properties, it influences androgen receptors in a way that may stimulate the proliferation of existing cancer cells in the prostate gland.

Digestive System:
UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula should not be used by peptic ulcers patients (due to the presence of forskolin).

Cardiovascular System:
UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula should not be consumed by hypertension (high blood pressure) patients (due to the presence of nettle root as it further raises blood pressure).

Pharmaceutical Drugs:
UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula should not be used concomitantly with warfarin (due to the presence of garlic which may potentiate the anticoagulant effects of warfarin and thereby may cause bleeding).

Reference: Fugh-Berman, A. Herb-drug interactions. Lancet. 355(9198):134-138, 2000. [Concurrent use of herbs may mimic, magnify, or oppose the effect of drugs. Plausible cases of herb-drug interactions include bleeding when warfarin is combined with garlic. Many reports of herb-drug interactions are sketchy and lack laboratory analysis of suspect preparations. Health-care practitioners should caution patients against mixing herbs and pharmaceutical drugs.]

PLEASE NOTE: When acute nephritis (kidney infection) is present - accompanied by high fever along with sudden retention of urine (a painful urge to pass urine but the inability to do so) - have your condition assessed by a health care practitioner.

Do Not Stop!

Although symptoms-free, please do NOT stop taking the UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula and continue to use it until the botle is empty (up to 7-10 days).

If you are prone to repeated (chronic) bladder infections, for the first few months, keep an extra bottle of the UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula on hand, and use it immediately at the first signs of infection for the minimum of three (3) consecutive days.

In time, however, you will notice that the frequency of your bladder infections begins to seize, making the further use of the UTI Uribiotic Unisex Formula - with some possible exceptions - unnecessary.
